Contact lenses have become more and more popular as optometric technology improves. But as contact lens sales increase, so does the number of patients returning to their optometrist’s office with issues.
According to Dr. Timothy Osius, an optometrist based out of Loveland, Colorado, contact lens wearers who do not follow proper care instructions may return to the office with corneal abrasions, edemas or ulcers. These issues are a result of overwearing or not cleaning your contact lenses, allowing bacteria and debris to build up on the lens. To ensure your eyes stay healthy, here are some things every contact lens wearer should know.
Don’t Overwear Your Lenses
Not all contact lenses are created equal. Some lenses are designed to be worn for up to a month (called “extended wear” lenses) while others are meant to be worn once before throwing them out (called “daily wear” lenses). Some brands, such as the Acuvue Oasys contact lenses, are designed to be worn for 2-weeks. Pay attention to the recommended wear-time, and consult your doctor before wearing your contact lenses for a longer period of time.
Do Not Sleep in Your Contacts
Contact lenses limit the amount of oxygen that reaches your cornea, so it is important that they are taken out at the end of each day to allow your eyes to recover. If you have extended wear lenses, be sure to store them in a case with contact lens solution overnight. Daily lenses should be thrown away – do not rewear daily lenses without consulting with your doctor. There are some exceptions, such as Air Optix Night & Days, which are made with a unique material that is more breathable, making them safe for sleep. Please check with your doctor to see if your lenses are safe for overnight use.
Deep Clean Extended Wear Lenses
In order to allow some oxygen to reach your eye, contact lenses are porous. These microscopic pours may become clogged over time due to buildup from natural minerals in tears or debris from outdoor exposure. It is recommended that you clean extended wear lenses regularly using Clear Care or similar products to eliminate buildup. Follow the instructions for these products carefully as misuse can cause damage to the lenses or your eyes.
Always Have a Pair of Glasses on Standby
Optometrists and Opticians alike recommend having a pair of glasses that is no more than 2-years old even if you mostly wear contact lenses. It is important to give your eyes a break from contact lenses on a regular basis to prevent corneal abrasions or other issues associated with overwearing your contacts. Additionally, there may be situations where you can’t wear your contacts, like if you have an eye infection or you lose a lens. This makes it essential to have a pair of glasses on hand.
Contact lenses are an incredible option for many individuals who need vision correction. Be sure to follow proper care instructions to ensure the long-lasting health of your eyes.
