SOUTH JERSEY – Mosquitos are returning this season with warm weather and they’ve brought a few friends with them.
According to the NJ Department of Health, mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) are spread by infected mosquitoes. While these diseases can cause serious illness, the best way to prevent them is to avoid mosquito bites.
Mosquitoes and ticks can transmit serious diseases to humans and animals. Mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) can cause severe illness and even death. Lyme disease, transmitted by ticks, can cause a variety of symptoms and can be severe if left untreated. Take action to reduce mosquito breeding sites and tick habitats around your property, and consult a healthcare provider if you experience any symptoms of mosquito or tick-borne diseases.
Some ways to prevent mosquito bites consist of
- Using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
- Empty or change outdoor standing water weekly to stop mosquito breeding.
- Using window and door screens.
Residents can also help reduce mosquito populations by eliminating standing water on their properties. If you have any concerns about mosquitoes, contact your local mosquito control agency.
