CARNEY’S POINT, N.J. – The LUNATECS, a high school robotics team composed of 15 high school students from Salem and Gloucester counties and sponsored by South Jersey Robotics (SJR), recently completed its most successful season in its 25-year history.
For the second straight year, the LUNATECS, also known as Team 316, qualified for the world championship in Houston last month. The team completed the four-day tournament ranked 13th out of 77 teams in its division and broke into the top 100 worldwide for the first time (ranked 78th in the world). Currently, 3,286 teams compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition.
To qualify for the world championship, the LUNATECS scored several major wins earlier this year:
- Finalists at the Robbinsville Qualifier
- Finalists and FIRST Impact Award winners at the Bensalem Qualifier
- Finished the season ranked 4th out of 127 teams in the Mid-Atlantic district and were one of two teams that advanced to the FIRST Championship representing FIRST Mid-Atlantic as Impact Award winners as District Champions
Next up, the students will participate in SJR’s adaptive device program, designing and engineering pediatric swim fins for use in aqua therapy. Read about Project Propel at https://www.sjrobotics.com/blog/its-not-just-about-the-robot/
