PINE HILL, N.J. — Marjorie Graves is a local baker in South Jersey called The Bubbly Chef who specializes in making baked goods, specifically cakes, to be a source of warmth for her customers.

“I just like to be in the kitchen and build my skill and since I have the time to do it, I use the time productively,” said Graves.

Local baker Marjorie Graves, aka The Bubbly Chef, brings her customers warmth along with her baked goods. It’s What’s Good in South Jersey — with Isaiah Showell.

Graves began her business one year ago during the pandemic when she was furloughed from her job, but after several positive reviews of her baking, she began to take things more seriously.

“I’m pretty hospitable and I like to host because it’s my way of giving,” Graves said. “I’m making strawberry shortcake today. I like to make that. It’s plain vanilla cake, and I make my own whip cream out of heavy whipping cream along with graham cracker crumbs that I bake until golden brown then I place on top of the cake. I’m using frozen strawberries because they taste better when they’re preserved. I have flour, sugar, eggs, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and vanilla extract.”

Graves said she loves baking from scratch, and she only gets better with each new project she takes on.

“In my head homemade things taste better and they don’t taste as processed,” she said. “I want to make everything from scratch. so I know where it’s coming from and how much sugar is in it. I learn very fast, so I don’t have many mistakes.”

Graves calls her baked goods works of art once their finished and she cares about the smallest of details because presentation is important to her along with customers being happy with her work.

“I like to be a source of warmth, peace, and welcoming to others and I think baking allows for that and it brings a source of comfort to people,” Graves added.
