VINELAND, N.J. — The Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the County Department of Human Services will hold the third annual Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, August 29.

The Vigil will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Performing Art Center Theater at Rowan College of South Jersey Cumberland Campus, located at 3322 College Drive in Vineland.

According to the New Jersey Attorney General Department, there have been 37 confirmed overdose deaths in Cumberland County since the beginning of 2019.

“Cumberland County is not immune,” Melissa Niles, Cumberland County Mental Health & Addictions director said in a press release. “Unfortunately, it is probably more common than not that we all know someone who has directly been impacted by an overdose. We want our community to know that we support them, help is available and recovery is possible. Families and friends need our help in learning how to cope with this devastating epidemic. Overdose is preventable. Knowing the real facts about addiction, recovery and what to do when you see someone experiencing an overdose DOES save lives.”

There will be remembrance activities, community resources, speakers who have been affected by overdose, and a montage tribute of those being remembered who have died by overdose.

If you have lost a loved one to an overdose and you would like to have them commemorated during the event, please email a photo, with name, date of birth and date of passing to ashleighhu@co.cumberland.nj.us.
