AAA’s newest fuel report shows how New Jersey’s gas prices, among the nation’s, have jumped significantly since the start of the Iran War in February.
The national average jumped 27 cents in the past week, the largest jump since 2022 at the outset of the war in Ukraine, according to Matt Bowker, Public Relations Specialist at AAA South Jersey.
Today’s national average is $3.320, with all New Jersey county averages above $3.20.
While springtime gas price increases aren’t unusual, a major part of this one is the effects from war in Iran. Strikes caused oil and gas facilities to shut down, and threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz have restricted shipping, according to Reuters.
As the conflict goes on, there are fears over the impact of more potential restrictions on shipping and storage, which could further affect gas prices.
