Looking Back To 2016 Is Trending, But Why?

Commentary By: Jamie Georges, Follow South Jersey Community Journalist

The internet is connecting a generation to nostalgia.

In the year of 2026, many have taken the time to look back on the nostalgia of 2016.

So, why now are people reminiscing about memories from 2016?

Maybe to look back on the time people were obsessed with Pokemon Go, the mannequin challenge was being performed in classrooms, and Snapchat’s dog filter was everyone’s new profile picture.

A time when “Stranger Things” aired its first season and we watched under our covers. When the Iphone released “first-generation Airpods” and largely gained traction.

It’s interesting how, even after ten years, a single reflection on cherished memories can feel like yesterday.

I’m not the only person who has looked back at old photos and trends from 2016. But the world has taken the time to do the same.

Recently, social media has become flooded with fond virtual moments that may have been hidden in our memory. Like the statement make-up trends of that time and music like “Closer” by the Chainsmokers featuring Halsey and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, had become one of the most popular songs that year.

The best part is that internet users experienced what are now treasured memories all at the same time.

People may simply be reminded that 2016 has created unforgettable trends and shared moments that we still hold vividly in our memory today.

Perhaps times like these reveal how virtual moments have deeply connected internet communities, even long after their time.

Will 2026 carry lasting memories like 2016 has? At least this is what social media seems to be hoping for.

It’s reasonable to assume that although each year is filled with highs and lows, 2016 has become a year the internet has shared fond memories of, proving its place as a defining chapter in our digital culture.
