MOORESTOWN, N.J. – Four complete strangers gathered in Karen Reiner’s living room after talking online to address the racial discrimination in Moorestown. Eight years later, their group has grown into a thriving non-profit organization called MooreUnity.

“At the time, we were just people who lived in the community and didn’t represent those kinds of discriminatory feelings,” Meredith Butts, Treasurer, explained. “Our initial task was to find a way to come together as a town to create ties instead of allowing more divisions to pop up.”

As time went on, they hosted more events and formed an official organization with Reiner as president.

Their mission, to embrace diversity and facilitate unity, is purposely broad in its reach.

“It’s difficult to encompass all the ways in which there are divisions in society. We aren’t interested in trying to sweep anything under the rug. Instead, we want to address everything that matters to the people of Moorestown,” Butts said.

MooreUnity hosts many events throughout the year. This past July, they organized the Disabilities Pride Fest where food trucks and games populated the library and the outside yard. They also planned for a quiet zone for babies, pets, and those with PTSD or sensory issues for the 4th of July parade. At the end of September, they have a Diwali event that aims to teach the community more about the holiday.

The goal of these events is to help people in the community find a sense of belonging.

“It’s also been instrumental in giving every town member a voice and continuing to broaden their perspectives. You get to learn about others’ experiences and culture,” Butts stated.

Most funding comes from donations through Facebook and the Rotary Club. However, MooreUnity acknowledges that the volunteer work of members of the community has been essential, including giving their time, energy, knowledge, and expertise to help with events and programs.

MooreUnity encourages everyone to get involved by attending events and suggesting activities addressing changes you want to see in the community.
