Small Business Spotlight: Local Coffee Shops Offer More Than A Jolt Of Joe

SOUTH JERSEY – Finding community in a post-pandemic world can be overwhelming. Many long for that  feeling of belonging and community, but are unsure how to find it. One place that people tend to neglect are locally owned coffee shops. South Jersey is peppered with so many independently owned coffee shops that it is no challenge to track down new ones to try.

Atlantic County

Somers Cafe is centrally located in Somers Point, directly across from the museum and one block from the bay. Many local artists were displayed proudly around the room, and a large  chalkboard allowed customers to write their names and messages on the walls. The  atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, with many vegan and vegetarian options on the menu!

Cape May County

Coffee Tyme, located in Cape May has a cozy welcoming atmosphere. The friendly staff greets every customer that walks through the door. Coffee Tyme showcased many local artists’ work. However, the real showstopper of the shop is the Banana Split latte (the barista,  Jade’s, favorite drink) and the smiles that were on every face.

Salem County

Inclusion Cafe in Elmer dedicates their business to promoting and celebrating differences.  The cafe itself is welcoming, with great photo opportunities and seating both indoors and  out. The drink selection was wonderful, especially the “Butterbeer” latte (with edible gold!)  and “Fruity Amethyst tea.”

Gloucester County

Hens and Honey in Swedesboro has a gorgeous interior to the cafe that is filled with colorful decor and a boutique. Hens and Honey has a fun drink selection which includes latte flights  and a hot cocoa bar. The staff were friendly, and not shy with going above and beyond for  their customers. The atmosphere of community is infectious. The designation is popular, and for good reason.

Camden County

Ren’s Coffeehouse and Books is located in Blackwood. While one could stop in to try one of  their delicious specialty drinks, the real allure of the shop is its dedication to building a community. The shop hosts many events, such as “Coffee with Cats,” an event to promote a  local animal shelter. The store doubles as a bookstore, boasting both popular commercial books as well as local authors. Other events, such as an open-mic night, which is hosted on every second Tuesday of the month, are hosted in an effort to bring people together and share  their art.

Cumberland County

Xpresso Cafe in Vineland is located within the Cumberland mall, which is a busy location, but don’t let that fool you. “The baristas really get to know you,” Aaliyah Custodio Rivera, a customer, said. “They always make sure to greet their regulars by name and remember their  order.” The hot chocolate comes highly recommended.

Each of these coffee shops were dedicated to creating an atmosphere that fostered  engagement from the community. By taking the time to engage with small local businesses and those that frequented them, people can begin to feel less isolated. It is through careful  effort and familiarity that restructuring of community happens.
