SOUTH JERSEY — Former Senate President and South Jersey resident Steve Sweeney, New Jersey’s announced today, December 11, that he will seek the Democratic nomination for Governor in 2025.
“I’ll always put New Jersey’s kids, working families, and seniors first,” Sweeney said in a video announcing his candidacy. “You know that’s who I’ll fight for because it’s who I’ve always fought for. It’s who I am. A fighter for people who can’t fight for themselves. I’m running for Governor because New Jersey is worth fighting for.”
New Jersey’s longest-serving Senate President, Sweeney also stated that he wants to ensure that the state is more affordable for all citizens. “If you want to, you should be able to work with dignity, buy a home, raise a family, care for loved ones and retire confidently – all in New Jersey,” he said.
He said in the video that he would fight for a “tax system that works for New Jersey families and retirees, not big corporations,” a first-class PreK-12 education system, expanded higher educational and job training opportunities, increased funding for local police, and a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights.
Sweeney, a union Ironworker, entered politics after his daughter, Lauren, was born with Down syndrome.
“I learned how hard it could be to get services for people with special needs,” Sweeney said in the video. “That’s what turned me into a public servant.”
Sweeney has worked to expend services for the developmentally disabled during his 13 years on the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders, including 12 as freeholder-director, to his 20 years in the Senate.
