MAYS LANDING, N.J. – The Recovery Centers of America at Lighthouse held a free in-person event on April 13, teaching people how to administer Narcan, a brand of naloxone that treats overdoses in an emergency situation.

During the event, attendees heard from addiction treatment specialists who talked about solutions for long-term recovery, learned about RCA’s programs, and took a tour of the facility.
Recovery Centers of America is a healthcare network of treatment facilities that is committed to saving one million lives from addiction.
In January of this year, there were 1,261 administrations of Narcan in New Jersey with 365 of them from South Jersey counties. There were also 229 suspected drug related deaths in January, 75 of which happened in South Jersey.
Director of Nursing Joseph Ognibene spoke to the attendees about how to use the Narcan nasal spray. He explained that it is not harmful and can be used multiple times on one person, using it until it is effective.
“We want one of these in everyone’s pocket,” Ognibene said.
On March 29, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved selling Narcan without a prescription.
Ognibene encouraged everyone to carry it on them.
“It saves lives,” he emphasized.
