Cumberland County Women’s Suffrage Centennial March and Rally Set for Monday Afternoon

BRIDGETON, N.J. — Led by the Down Jersey Coalition, community members will participate in a march and rally to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s passage on Monday afternoon.

The Cumberland County Women’s Suffrage Centennial March and Rally will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 28 at the Bridgeton Zoo. Those who participate will march down Mayor Aitken Drive from the zoo to the Pavilion in Morningside Park, which is where a subsequent rally with a number of speakers from Cumberland County will address the audience. Masks and social distancing will be required as part of the event.

Below is the list of speakers slated to address the rally, which is currently scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m.:

  • Celeste Riley, Cumberland County Clerk
  • Darlene Baker & Carol Musso, Cumberland County Freeholders
  • Donna Pearson & Victoria Lod, Cumberland County Freeholder Candidates

Other participating partners who helped organize this event include the City of Bridgeton, Cumberland County’s Board of Elections, Cumberland County’s Chapter of the Federation of Democratic Women, the Cumberland County Clerk’s Office, Cumberland County Historical Society, Cumberland County Library, the Japanese-American Citizens League, and the Second Masonic District, among others.

The 19th Amendment of the US Constitution was ratified in August 1920, and it prohibits states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote based on their sex.
