BRIDGETON, N.J. — New Jersey is currently in “Phase 2” of reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pandemic and its related precautions are far from over.
Governor Phil Murphy announced that the reopening of indoor dining would be postponed indefinitely on Monday, June 29. As COVID-19 continues to spread rapidly throughout the country, anyone entering New Jersey after visiting Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, or Utah is expected to quarantine for 14 days. Restrictions in these areas come at the same time as recent progress in others, such as visitors over the age of 18 being permitted at hospitals and the opening of shopping malls, amusement parks, and casinos at limited capacity.
New Jersey has reported 173,402 cases of COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic and 13,355 confirmed deaths. At time of writing, 917 New Jerseyans are hospitalized with COVID-19. A goal of New Jersey leadership expressed at Gov. Murphy’s daily briefing is to keep the Rt below 1. Rt is a variation of R0, a measure that estimates the number of new infections resulting from one positive case, while accounting for transmission rates. New Jersey’s R0 has increased slightly since entering Phase 2, from 0.70 to 0.88 — but is still within the goal range.
While the majority of New Jersey’s cases have occurred in North Jersey, South Jersey is being impacted by COVID-19 as well. New Jersey’s COVID-19 Information Hub reports that in Camden County, there have been 7,479 positive tests and 470 confirmed deaths. New cases are rising in the county with an average of 23 new cases per day in the past week compared to 17 per day in the week prior, according to data reported by the New York times.
A similar trend of increasing daily reports of positive cases can be seen in Gloucester County (2645 positive tests, 181 confirmed deaths overall). Salem County, with 802 positive tests and 72 confirmed deaths, has remained stagnant in rates of new cases. Decreasing daily reports of positive cases are seen in Atlantic (2,936 positive cases, 207 confirmed deaths) and Cumberland (3017 positive tests, 136 confirmed deaths) counties. Cape May County (716 positive tests, 70 confirmed deaths) has seen few new cases in the past two weeks. It’s important to note that trends in reported daily positive results can be influenced by both disease presence and testing prevalence.
In order to safely continue with reopening, widespread testing is essential. Testing allows for identification of potential asymptomatic transmitters and contact tracing. New Jersey has administered over 1.5 million tests to date with a goal of 20,000 tests daily. Gov. Murphy has emphasized that there is currently no issue with testing supply and residents are encouraged to get tested.
