CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. — For most people, Christmas in Cape May is all about shopping, restaurants, house tours, and theater — but holiday wreath-making at New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May has established its own niche as a unique holiday tradition.
The center’s wreath-making workshops are the most popular activity at the center during the last week of November and the first week of December. During those weeks the public is invited to engage in a program designed to send them home with a holiday masterpiece crafted with their own hands. Maybe it’s the aroma of fresh evergreens, pine, Douglas Fir, spruce, and cedar — or maybe it’s the camaraderie that seems to spring up spontaneously among the workshop participants, whatever the case, the holiday spirit is infectious and very real during this time at the Nature Center of Cape May.
The process of making a wreath or other holiday decoration is surprisingly easy to learn, even for the first-timers. Instruction is provided by the Nature Center staff and volunteers. Materials and supplies are furnished by the Center, but individuals are encouraged to bring their own favorite decorations, and greenery donations are always welcome.
Because holiday wreath-making is the center’s most popular holiday workshop, space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Wreath-making is also an important winter fundraiser for the center. The cost per person is $20 for New Jersey Audubon members and $28 for non-members.
Many groups have found that wreath-making is a fun and worthwhile holiday activity for their group. The center offers groups the option of scheduling an exclusive time for their workshops which could add to the holiday allure.
The complete holiday wreath-making workshop schedule for the 2019 season is as follows:
