Smith began teaching at SCC in 1977 and completed over four decades of instruction as associate professor of social sciences. Back in 2016, he established a book grant in honor of his mother, who he said was a lifelong learner. His hope was to help ensure others could pursue an education — something he believed was one of the cornerstones of his childhood, along with church, family, and helping others.
