City of Cape May to Solicit Suggestions for Proposed Bikeway Expansion Project During Public Info Session

CAPE MAY, N.J. – The City of Cape May will be holding a “Public Information Center” at the Cape May Elementary School Gymnasium located at 921 Lafayette Street on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. to inform local residents and businesses of the proposed Cape May Bikeway Expansion project in the City of Cape May.

The Cape May Bikeway Expansion project received funds through the Safe Routes to Schools Program (SRTS), which is a program established by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Division of Local Aid using Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvements Program funds, with a purpose of enabling and encouraging more children to bike or walk to school by providing safer and more appealing routes.

This meeting is open to all members of the public, and its purpose is to inform the public and solicit input and comments on the proposed improvements. Representatives from the City of Cape May, Cape May County, and the consulting design engineer will be available to answer questions. The public is encouraged to actively participate by providing comments at the meeting, through mail or by email.

The City of Cape May described several benefits of the project, including pedestrian and bicycle improvements along Madison Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue for students travelling from the US Coast Guard station and areas in between to the Cape May City Elementary School located on Lafayette Street. As well as correcting specific issues at Madison Avenue/Washington Street, Madison Avenue/Michigan Avenue, and Pittsburgh Avenue/Pennsylvania Avenue which currently have non-compliant ADA curb ramps, poorly placed detectable warning surface (DWS) and a lack of pedestrian signals and push buttons. The route between the US Coast Guard Station and the Elementary School currently lacks bicycle traffic signage and pavement markings and has inadequate pedestrian signing. Improvements to Lafayette Street/Madison Avenue intersection will be done under a separate project.

The Bikeway Expansion project is estimated to begin construction in fall 2020 and be completed by spring 2021.
