ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – A father died after jumping into the ocean when his 11-year-old son started to struggle in the water.

According to Atlantic City Police, the incident happened at 9:32 a.m. at New Jersey Avenue on Monday, July 29th.

The 11-year old was able to make it to the shore.

A former police officer, Jim Gloriso Jr. from Amsterdam, NY, grabbed a boogie board and found the father after he had gone under the water and attempted to put him onto the boogie board.

Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey was the first of two people to arrive followed by members from the fire department to assist both men to shore.

Officials say the Atlantic City Beach Patrol was off-duty at the time. When they heard the need for assistance, they immediately responded from a nearby beach tent.

The father was unresponsive and CPR was performed immediately. He was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, where he was pronounced dead.

The child was also transported to the medical center for treatment.
