A new excitement is in the air in the City of Brotherly Love, and I feel it every time the Sixers come up in conversation. After watching this team go through frustrating seasons, disappointing playoff exits, and questions about what the future would look like, I finally feel like there is something different about this team. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are now Philadelphia 76ers, and just saying that still feels unreal to me. As a Sixers fan, I have been waiting for a moment like this where the city has a reason to believe again.
LeBron James coming to Philadelphia completely changed the conversation around the Sixers. I grew up watching LeBron dominate the NBA, win championships, and become one of the greatest players to ever play the game, so seeing him put on a Sixers jersey is something I never thought I would experience. I remember watching him throughout his career and wondering what it would be like if he ever played in Philadelphia, and now that moment is here. When I think about LeBron sharing the court with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, I get excited about the possibilities this team has.
Then you add Jaylen Brown, and the excitement goes to another level. Brown is coming to Philadelphia after becoming one of the biggest stars in Boston, which makes his arrival even more interesting for a city that has always had a strong rivalry with the Celtics. I love what Brown brings because he is not just another scorer; he can defend, attack the basket, create his own shot, and play with the physicality that Philadelphia fans appreciate. Seeing Brown go from wearing a Celtics uniform to putting on a Sixers jersey is going to make those matchups against Boston feel even more personal.
For me, this is what makes the upcoming season so different. It is not just about getting one superstar and hoping everything works out. The Sixers have surrounded their biggest stars with pieces that can help them win, and that is something I have been wanting to see for years. I do not want to watch Embiid, Maxey, LeBron, and Brown have to do everything themselves every night. I want to see a team where the stars can trust the players around them.
That is why I love what the Sixers did to strengthen their roster.
The Sixers’ revamped roster and depth could be one of the biggest differences this season. One of the biggest problems I have seen with this team over the years is what happens when the stars leave the floor. There have been too many games when the Sixers lose their rhythm because there is not enough scoring, shooting or defense coming from the rest of the roster. This offseason feels like the front office made moves to address that problem and give the team more options.
Anfernee Simons is a huge addition because he gives the Sixers another player who can create his own shot and knock down three-pointers. I love having a player like that because there are going to be nights when the offense gets stuck, and Simons can be someone who comes in and changes the game. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (KCP) brings something completely different with his defense, championship experience, and ability to knock down open shots. Dean Wade gives the Sixers another versatile player who can defend, stretch the floor, and make the kind of plays that might not make the highlight reel but can help win basketball games. Labaron Philon is a solid rookie coming to make a name for himself, and with the right pieces around him, I think he could fit in just perfectly.
That depth matters to me just as much as the superstar names. LeBron is not going to be expected to play the entire game every night, and neither should Embiid, Brown, or Maxey. If the Sixers can get consistent production from all of their additions, this team can look completely different when the starters need a break. I have watched too many games where a lead disappears when the stars leave the floor, so having more reliable options around them is something I am genuinely excited about.
And then there is South Jersey.
I think sometimes people forget just how connected South Jersey is to Philadelphia sports. You do not have to live in Philadelphia to feel like you are part of the city’s sports culture. Growing up around South Jersey, I have seen how easily Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers conversations cross the Delaware River. Whether it is people watching games at home, meeting friends at a sports bar, or driving across the bridge for a game, Philadelphia sports are a major part of the culture in South Jersey.
That is why I think this Sixers season could be especially important for businesses throughout the area. If the team stays competitive and the excitement continues to grow, I would expect sports bars and restaurants in South Jersey to have another reason to bring fans through their doors, especially for nationally televised games or matchups against teams like Boston and New York. Fans could be more likely to go out, buy food, order drinks, bring their friends and make an entire night out of watching the Sixers. While that is my expectation rather than something that can be guaranteed, I think a more exciting Sixers team has the potential to create a positive ripple effect for businesses connected to Philadelphia sports fans.
The merchandise side could be just as interesting. I can already picture more people walking around South Jersey wearing LeBron Sixers jerseys, Jaylen Brown jerseys, Maxey jerseys and Embiid jerseys. Fans are going to want hats, shirts, hoodies and other Sixers gear because this feels like a new era. Local sports stores, memorabilia shops and other businesses that sell Philadelphia sports merchandise could have an opportunity to benefit if more fans decide they want to represent this team.
I also think there is something special about the memorabilia that could come from this era. Imagine being able to get a LeBron James Sixers jersey signed by LeBron himself and having it framed on your wall. If this team were to make a deep playoff run or win a championship, that jersey could become a special piece of Philadelphia sports history for the person who owns it. To me, that emotional connection is what makes sports memorabilia so meaningful because the item can remind a fan of where they were and what they experienced when that moment happened.
The same goes for Jaylen Brown. His Sixers jersey could carry even more meaning because of his history with Boston. If Brown helps Philadelphia beat Boston in the playoffs or becomes part of a championship team, a signed Brown Sixers jersey could become something fans hold onto forever. I think that is one of the coolest parts of sports: you never know which moments are going to become memories that people talk about years later.
The potential economic impact of LeBron’s arrival could stretch beyond jerseys and restaurants too. Fans traveling into Philadelphia for games could spend money on parking, transportation, hotels, food, and entertainment, while South Jersey businesses could benefit from fans who want to watch the games closer to home. I think an exciting Sixers team can create more reasons for people to go out, spend money, and support local businesses. Sports can affect an entire community beyond what happens on the scoreboard, and I think South Jersey is uniquely positioned because of its close connection to Philadelphia.
But for me, the biggest part of all of this is the feeling.
I have watched Sixers fans become frustrated. I have watched people question the roster, question the front office, and wonder whether this team would ever have enough around its stars to really compete. Now I see something different when people talk about the Sixers. There is excitement, there is curiosity, and, most importantly, there is belief.
I am excited to see LeBron play in Philadelphia. I am excited to see Jaylen Brown go against Boston in a Sixers uniform. I am excited to see Embiid and Maxey have more help around them, and I am excited to see what Simons, KCP, Wade, and the rest of the roster can bring to this team. Most importantly, I am excited to watch a Sixers team that finally feels like it has the pieces around its stars to compete.
Of course, I know there are still questions. Injuries can change everything, chemistry does not happen overnight and having a lot of talent does not automatically guarantee a championship. I am not going to sit here and say the Sixers are guaranteed to win it all because basketball does not work that way. But I can say that I have not felt this kind of excitement surrounding the team in a long time.
There is a new life surrounding Sixers basketball, and I believe that life stretches from Philadelphia into South Jersey. The city is talking about the Sixers again; fans are getting excited about the season and local businesses have an opportunity to benefit if that excitement continues throughout the year. For me, this is more than just LeBron James and Jaylen Brown joining a basketball team. It feels like Philadelphia has something to believe in again.
And as a Sixers fan, I cannot wait to see where this new beginning takes us.
