MAYS LANDING — Agape Water International Safe Haven (AWISH) hosted their “Expressions in Black” gala at the Hamilton Mall on Feb. 28.

The gala honored Robert Laws with the Trailblazer Award for being the first African American Deputy Mayor and Committee man in Hamilton Township along with Deborah Hamani and Corey Bard with the Community Leadership Award. Aseealah Davis is the CEO of AWISH and her intention was to shine light on African Americans in South Jersey doing exceptional things in the community.

The red carpet was trampled on by people celebrating local heroes accompanied by a DJ and mocktails provided by Bre’Anna Hernandez the mobile bartender. The gala almost never happened due to several changes in bookings venues and special guests speakers, but Davis looked past perceived ambiguity and made it a reality.

“If God gives you a dream you’ve got to go forward because if you take the leap of faith he’ll do the rest,” Davis said.

The “Expressions in Black” gala was definitely what’s good in South Jersey!
