NORTHFIELD — Christine’s Italian Pastry Shoppe is located at 314 Tilton Road in Northfield and it’s a snackers paradise.
Once you open the door, you’re immediately visually pleased by the cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, and of course the best seller, cannoli.
The shoppe is run by Suzanne Gurski and she bought the property from another baker and kept the name because her mother has the same name. Gurski has worked for both Touch of Italy in Egg Harbor Township and Carême’s in Mays Landing preparing her to run her own business and has done so since 2001.
Gurski can bake just about anything but she does have a few favorites, which are cheesecake, tiramisu, and carrot cake. Once she listed them we proceeded to make Irish Potatoes, demonstrating that she’s not only aware that St. Patrick’s day is near but she’s also willing to make things on the spot, and sent me home with the potatoes.
The Shoppe also provides gluten free pastries. In 2007, Gurski was diagnosed with celiac disease making her sensitive to gluten.
One of the things her customers appreciate is her consideration to those who are sensitive to gluten but still have a sweet tooth. Beet Pickled Eggs are also on the menu. While not a pastry, they are a family and customer favorite. The recipe came from Gurski’s grandmother and are sold in front of the store.
According to Gurski, she feels like a bartender because customers feel comfortable to vent to her and that’s what she wants, she wants her customers to feel like they’re visiting family. Christine’s Italian Pastry Shoppe is definitely what’s good in South Jersey, make sure to pay them a visit.
