MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — After reading about a new restaurant opening in Mount Laurel called Wonder, I was immediately intrigued. After searching online, I realized it was unlike anything I’ve heard of before. Instead of offering a specific kind of food, Wonder offers a variety of restaurants from across the world including Thai, Mediterranean, and much more. I decided to check it out the week of its opening to see what the hype was about.
Initially, when walking in I was taken aback as there wasn’t someone waiting to seat you at a table or to take your order. Instead, there was a kiosk where you could go through the entire process of ordering and paying for your meal without any contact with the staff. Some might view this as strange but in a world of Grubhub and UberEats this has become the new norm.
I struggled to make a decision as the options were a little overwhelming due to the menus being from various places. I finally landed on an American classic..burgers and fries. However, not just any kind, a truffle burger with truffle fries from a restaurant called Burger Baby.
After finalizing everything, I proceed to sit at one of the tables and wait for my order. I waited approximately 22 minutes before someone called my name. Despite there being seats in the restaurant, I didn’t see many people sitting down so I immediately understood this was a take the food to go situation.
Once I left, I decided to try the truffle fries first. Everything was well presented and you could tell it was freshly made. The fries themselves were crispy with a tasty Parmesan dusting. I would say they were probably my favorite part of the meal.
As for the burger, while delicious, was slightly underwhelming as it did not have as strong of a truffle flavor as the fries. I mainly tasted the caramelized onions but for $17.75 you can’t expect much more.
While I would go back I do realize that for the average person having this many options at one restaurant could be overwhelming and confusing. At the same time I do think this idea is quite innovative and allows for people to try different types of food they wouldn’t normally be able to have.
I think if you live near Mount Laurel, Wonder is definitely worth trying at least once.
