In a dramatic and historic display of resistance, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey has taken to the Senate floor in a marathon protest speech lasting 25 hours, 5 minutes. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday, Booker’s impassioned address aims to call attention to what he describes as the dangerous policies of President Donald Trump’s administration. His speech, now the longest in Senate history, underscores his commitment to challenging what he sees as an existential threat to American democracy and public well-being.
A filibuster is a legislative tactic used in the U.S. Senate to delay or block a vote on a bill, nomination, or other legislative action. It typically involves extended speeches, procedural delays, or other methods to prevent a measure from advancing. Unlike the House of Representatives, where debate time is strictly limited, the Senate allows for unlimited debate unless 60 senators vote to invoke cloture, a procedure that ends a filibuster and forces a vote. Historically, filibusters have been used by both parties to obstruct legislation they strongly oppose, sometimes lasting for hours or even days.
While originally intended to encourage extended debate and compromise, filibusters have increasingly become a tool for partisan gridlock, often stalling major legislative initiatives. The last filibuster of this magnitude and length was held by Strom Thurmond in 1957 in attempts to prevent the Civil Rights Act from being passed according to NPR.
Throughout his speech, Booker has criticized various policies and actions of the Trump administration, including proposed spending cuts, attempts to abolish the Department of Education, and efforts to bypass the judicial system. He emphasized that these measures jeopardize American democracy, financial stability, and public safety. Booker stated, “These are not normal times in America. And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate.”
He went over a lot of the turmoil over the last 20 weeks since Trump has begun his second term. Touching on topics like citizens losing much needed healthcare, elders and veterans losing social security benefits they’ve worked so hard into, over 10,000 federal employees being fired, NPR reported, countries all over the world. He spoke out on behalf of the American people but also on behalf of New Jerseyians , as he stated the direct impact of these actions by the Trump Administration.
The senator’s prolonged address has temporarily halted Senate proceedings, delaying the confirmation of President Trump’s nominees. This tactic, reminiscent of historical filibusters, underscores the depth of Booker’s opposition to the current administration’s agenda. Notably, he later explained to reporters that he stopped eating on Friday and stopped drinking a day before delivering the speech to prepare for the extended time without a bathroom break according to CBS News.
Booker’s endeavor has garnered support from fellow Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who praised his “strength and conviction.” By engaging in this extended speech, Booker seeks to energize the Democratic base and demonstrate a firm stance against policies he views as harmful to the nation. The speech also garnered 350 million-plus likes on @SenatorBooker’s TikTok livestream of the speech, according to a press release from Senator Booker’s office.
As the speech continued, it acted as a tool to be used as an act of political theater that will influence legislative proceedings and public opinion. Regardless of the outcome, Senator Booker’s marathon address stands as a testament to his dedication to defending American values, making it clear that he is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to stand up for what he believes is right.
Whether it changes the course of policy or simply galvanizes the opposition, his speech will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most significant moments of resistance in modern Senate history. The message that rang loud and clear throughout the senate hall was simply “The power of the people is greater than the people in power.”
