Gloucester County To Host Annual Senior Citizen Picnic

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – The annual Gloucester County Senior Citizen Picnic will be held on Sept. 17 from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Red Bank Battlefield Park in National Park. The picnic is open to county residents 60 years and older.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said in a statement that this year’s theme is “Philly, Philly” and that seniors attending are encouraged to wear their favorite Philadelphia sports team gear.

“The Senior Picnic is always a great event.  The seniors have a great time, they dance, have lunch and learn about services and programs that are available in a fun venue.  It is a true tradition,” Damminger said.

Lunch, music, live entertainment, and dance contests will be presented throughout the day.  To add to the “Philly” theme, Philly pretzels, ice cream, and water ice will be available.

The picnic will also feature a dunk tank and seniors can take a shot to dunk Freeholder Jim Jefferson, Liaison to the Division of Senior Services.

“Our staff services thousands of seniors a year and the picnic provides a day that is fun, social and educational,” Jefferson said. “About 1,200 seniors attend the event each year and it is great for everyone to see old friends and meet new ones too. And, they get to throw a ball and get a chance at dunking me.”

According to Jefferson, Gloucester County is home to 51,470 residents aged 60 and older.

Tickets are $2.00 each and are available at the Division of Senior Services at 115 Budd Blvd, West Deptford and the county’s six nutrition sites. The ticket price helps defray the cost of the event, which is funded with the Title III Older Americans Act area grant. The rain date for the picnic is Sept. 18.
