CAMDEN, N.J.– American Water announced in a press release that it has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its new corporate headquarters building in Camden.
President and chief executive officer of American Water, Susan Story, said that the award recognizes American Water’s commitment to the environment.
“This certification demonstrates American Water’s commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership in all aspects of our business. Achieving this certification required a tremendous amount of collaboration through design, construction, and completion of our new home in Camden,” Story said. “It’s important to recognize our partners: Robert A.M. Stern, Gensler, Driscoll Jingoli JV, and Liberty Property Trust. I also want to recognize all of our employees for their dedication and hard work that made this certification and our new home possible.”
The exterior and interior of the building both received LEED Platinum certification for environmentally friendly building features which include water reuse system, providing water for the building toilets and landscaping; LED lighting through the building and solar shades on the windows to maximize the use of natural light; high-efficiency glass windows to reduce the heat impact inside the building; low-flow toilets, sinks and showers to reduce water usage; and high-efficiency HVAC systems to reduce energy consumption.
“At Gensler, our diverse team of designers recognize that we have the professional responsibility to improve the quality of all life through resource conscious design,” Jim Camp, Principal, Gensler. “When presented with the opportunity to partner with American Water on their new headquarters, we engaged an integrative design team early in the process to craft spaces that would produce measurable positive outcomes. With its completion we are so pleased to see such an exceptional legacy project that deeply embedded sustainability performance goals into the design.”
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world providing a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.
American Water’s new headquarters at One Water Street, is the first and only building in Camden to be certified LEED Platinum.
