SALEM COUNTY – Officials from the Salem County Department of Health & Human Services’ Office on Aging and Disabilities have announced that it is adding outdoor walks to its Move Yourself! Program this month.

On Thursdays, participants will have the option to go outside to take part in a group walk at one of the county’s parks.

Indoor exercise classes will continue two days a week, with a nurse on site for indoor exercise activities. Indoor exercise classes include Core Strength, High-Intensity Interval Training, Chair Yoga, Indoor Walking, and Stretch & Strength.

Caregivers are welcome to attend with their client or family member.

“We now have upwards of 50 people participating in the indoor classes, and we are seeing all levels of participation,” Freeholder Dr. Mickey Ostrum, who chairs the Health and Human Services Committee said. “Consequently, we have one of our nurses on site for the indoor exercises to provide information and support people trying to incorporate movement into their daily routines.”

Indoor exercise takes place at 10:30 a.m., every Tuesday and Thursday at the Mid-Atlantic States Training Center at 391 South Broadway in Pennsville. Outdoor group walks will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays. Both indoor exercise and outdoor walks will include information on various health topics.

Twice a month, the Office of Aging and Disabilities offers free box lunches to seniors who participate in the exercise program. Seniors must register 48 hours in advance by calling the general information number, 856-339-8622.

Once a month, a special topic will be presented to participants and on the last Tuesday of the month, the nursing division will offer free screenings for sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.
