MILLVILLE, N.J. — Late summer is a perfect time for a cleanout. The season is beginning to change, and that garage, basement, shed or storage area you have been meaning to tackle is probably not going to clean itself.
The satisfying part is clearing the clutter. The harder part can be figuring out what to do with things that cannot simply go in the trash.
This Saturday, Cumberland County residents have an easy answer.
On Saturday, September 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., The Authority will hold its final Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding event of the year at the Cumberland County Solid Waste Complex, 169 Jesse Bridge Road in Millville.
The free event provides a valuable opportunity for residents to dispose of difficult-to-handle household materials safely and responsibly. Better still, The Authority has made the process remarkably easy.
It operates like a well-oiled machine.
Residents drive into the facility and follow a designated route from station to station. Personnel provide directions and assist with materials along the way. There is no wandering around a disposal facility trying to figure out where something belongs.
You drive in, follow the instructions, pull up to the appropriate station and let the professionals do the rest.
Among the accepted materials are gasoline, pesticides, used motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, cleaning chemicals, oil-based paints, electronics, fluorescent bulbs and propane tanks. Document shredding also offers a secure way to get rid of old personal and financial records.
A Service With a Community Benefit
The value of the event reaches beyond individual households.
Giving residents a convenient place to bring materials that require special handling helps protect the local environment while solving a problem many households face.
The Authority’s work extends into environmental programs, economic development, redevelopment, infrastructure and other community initiatives. Saturday’s event offers an immediate example of what that work can mean to the people who live here.
It is a straightforward example of public service: identify a problem people have and provide a practical way to solve it.
And in this case, the solution could leave a garage with a little more room, a filing cabinet with a little less paper and Cumberland County a little cleaner.
