NJ Picks A New Governor This Year, Here’s A Look At Who’s Running And How To Register And Vote

SOUTH JERSEY — With this year’s election for Governor coming up, here is what you need to know. Covering how and where to register and vote in New Jersey’s new Governor. 

What do I need to register?

Similar to the presidential election you must register to vote in order to vote on our next Governor. 

  • Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Must be a New Jersey citizen 
  2. Must be 18 years old ; however, individuals aged 17 may register in anticipation of their 18th birthday.
  3. Individuals currently incarcerated due to a conviction of an indictable offense are ineligible.
  4. Persons adjudicated as mentally incompetent by a judicial authority are disqualified.  

Where can I register?

Electronic Registration: The State of New Jersey allows online voter registration through its official election website, offering a streamlined registration process.

Postal Registration: A voter registration application, available for download and printing, may be completed and submitted via  mail to the respective applicant’s county Board of Elections.

In-Person Registration: Voter registration services are accessible at county Boards of Elections offices and designated Motor Vehicle Commission locations.

Important Deadlines:

These are the important dates you’ll need to know for this year’s election. From registration to Election Day. 

  • Voter Registration Deadline for Primary Election is May 20 
  • Primary Election Deadline is June 10 
  • Voter registration deadline for general election is October 14

Who are the candidates?

With all the information on how, where and when to vote. You may be wondering who is on the ballot to replace Governor Phil Murphy. 

There are a total of 6 Democrats and 5 Republicans who are currently in the running of being the Garden States new governor according to NJ Monitor. 

According to NorthJersey.com, here are the candidates for the 2025 primary election for the next New Jersey Governor, and some general information about them and their campaigns so far.

Democratic Party Candidates

  • Ras Baraka: The  Mayor of Newark, Baraka brings a platform focused on urban revitalization, social justice, and progressive policies. His tenure in Newark has been marked by efforts to address issues such as poverty, crime, and educational disparities. His candidacy is anticipated to garner strong support from urban communities and progressive factions within the Democratic Party.
  • Steve Fulop: The Mayor of Jersey City, Fulop possesses a background in finance and military service, which he often highlights. His policy positions generally reflect a pragmatic approach, with emphasis on economic development and infrastructure improvements. His experience in managing a large urban center positions him as a potentially strong contender.
  • Josh Gottheimer: Current Representative of New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gottheimer is known for his centrist Democratic views. He has often focused on bipartisan cooperation and fiscal responsibility. His ability to appeal to a broad range of voters could be a significant asset in a statewide election.
  • Mikie Sherrill: The current Representative of New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, brings a unique perspective to the political arena. Her policy priorities include addressing issues related to national security, healthcare, and environmental protection. She is seen as a rising star within the Democratic Party.
  • Sean Spiller: The President of the New Jersey Education Association. Spiller’s candidacy is expected to be strongly supported by organized labor and education advocates. His platform is likely to focus on issues related to public education funding, teacher rights, and social equity. Another notable popular name on the ballot.
  • Stephen M. Sweeney: The former President of the New Jersey Senate. Sweeney has a long history in New Jersey politics and strong ties to labor unions. His experience in the state legislature provides him with a deep understanding of state government and policy.

Republican Party Candidates

  • Jon Bramnick: A New Jersey State Senator representing the 21st Legislative District, Bramnick is known for his moderate Republican views and his ability to work across party lines. His focus on fiscal responsibility and pragmatic solutions could appeal to a broad range of voters.
  • Jack Ciattarelli: Having previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly and as the 2021 Republican nominee for Governor, Ciattarelli possesses significant statewide name recognition. His policy positions generally emphasize fiscal conservatism and limited government.
  • Mario Kranjac: The former Mayor of Englewood Cliffs, Kranjac’s candidacy brings a focus on local governance and issues affecting suburban communities.
  • Bill Spadea: A former radio broadcaster, Spadea brings a populist message to the Republican field. His campaign is expected to focus on issues related to taxation, government spending, and cultural conservatism.

It’s encouraged that voters do their own research on which candidate they feel is best for New Jersey, and remember to vote on Election Day, November 4, 2025.
