SOUTH JERSEY – Farmers markets have become a cornerstone of many communities across the United States, offering a unique blend of fresh & local produce, artisanal goods, and a sense of community. These vibrant marketplaces provide numerous benefits to both buyers and growers, fostering a more sustainable and interconnected food system.
Buying from farmers markets may seem intimidating at first glance if you’re used to conventional stores. But there are numerous benefits for buyers according to the USDA:
- Fresh, Local Produce: Farmers markets offer an abundance of seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables. This ensures that consumers are getting the freshest and most nutritious produce, often picked just days before purchase.
- Support Local Economy: By purchasing from local farmers, buyers contribute directly to the local economy. Their dollars help support small businesses, create jobs, and strengthen the community.
- Know Your Farmer: Farmers markets provide an opportunity to interact directly with the people who grow your food. This personal connection allows you to learn about farming practices, ask questions, and develop relationships with the producers.
- Reduced Food Miles: Buying local produce significantly reduces the distance food travels from farm to table. This helps to lower carbon emissions and minimize the environmental impact of food transportation.
- Variety and Quality: Farmers markets offer a diverse selection of products, including heirloom varieties, organic options, and specialty items that may not be available at traditional grocery stores.
Buyers aren’t the only beneficiaries. Farmers who sell at these markets have a plethora of benefits according to Purdue University:
- Direct Market Access: Farmers markets provide a direct channel for growers to sell their produce to consumers. This eliminates the need for intermediaries, allowing farmers to receive a higher portion of the retail price.
- Customer Feedback: Interacting with customers at farmers markets gives growers valuable insights into consumer preferences and needs. This information can help them improve their products and farming practices.
- Community Building: Farmers markets create a sense of community among growers and consumers. Participating in these events allows farmers to connect with other local producers, share knowledge, and collaborate on projects.
- Economic Stability: Farmers markets can provide a stable income source for growers, especially during times when wholesale markets are volatile.
- Sustainability Promotion: Many farmers markets are committed to promoting sustainable farming practices. By participating in these markets, growers can showcase their environmentally friendly methods and educate consumers about the importance of sustainable agriculture.
Some might think that farmers markets are costly given the fresh organic produce in stores are prices higher than the non-organic produce. According to a study done by NOFAVT, farmers markets have been the cheaper option 10 out of 11 times when comparing organic produce.
That’s not all New Jersey has a special take on making farmers markets affordable and accessible. According to NJ.Gov, the state of New Jersey has a Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) that helps people have access to the benefits that farmers markets have proven to have. The WIC FMNP is available to women who qualify and are pregnant, going through postpartum and have children ages 2-5 this program gives $30-50 dollars to buy fresh produce and even seeds so people can grow their own produce. There is also a Senior version of this program that offers $50 to qualifying applicants over the age of 60.
The Berlin Farmers Market, located at 41 Clementon Rd., Berlin, is a prime example of a thriving farmers market. This popular market offers a wide variety of local produce, baked goods, artisanal crafts, and live music. They are home to 65 indoor businesses and 700 spaces for vendors who rent a table. They even host community events, for example they are hosting a Cruise Night October 18 to even a Trunk or Treat for families with young children to come together.
