MAYS LANDING, N.J. — Every Wednesday here in Mays Landing, Young’s Skating Center hosts adult night skating from 7:30-11 p.m.
Young’s is usually known for its all-night skating on Fridays for families and friends to come and enjoy or also known for hosting birthday parties for minors. That’s not the mindset for the skaters who come out on Wednesday nights, on these particular nights, skaters come out with the mentality of showing off their sickest moves and mainly come to backward skate.
A local veteran skater from the area, Jahmil Bailey, is one of the regulars who attends adult nights here at Young’s, and he gave us a few words on what’s most enjoyable about skating at adult night.
“My favorite part is fast backwards and slow sets,” Bailey said.
Another local veteran skater, Jayden Britt A.K.A. Jaydulla, who is a part of two different skate groups, also wanted to share his opinion on what he enjoys about adult night skating here at Young’s. He heavily mentions how good the music is and how much of a vibe it brings to the skaters and to the skating rink as a whole. He also emphasizes how you can mingle with different skaters.
“You can get a good adult skate in with no kids, Britt said. “The songs on a good adult night they won’t play at a kids’ [night] because kids’ night is for kids.”
Judy link and her husband Jim Link have owned the skating center for over thirty years. She wanted to share her thoughts on how she felt about skating as a sport.
“We can do jumps, spins, dancing and of course we have jam skating and all sorts of things,” Link said. “Our goal is to be in the Olympics.”
Link has a strong heartfelt passion for the sport of skating, and it’s big in the Olympics. She feels as though anything acrobatic ice skaters can do roller skaters can do just the same.
Here at Young’s, age doesn’t seem to matter. As long as you can move your hips and keep your balance, skating becomes something more than just a family outing or a birthday party.
