Diverse Voices Needed To Shape Cultural Representation In Education, Media, And Beyond

Commentary By: Taja Johnson, Follow South Jersey Intern

In the ever-evolving landscape of American society, the importance of multiculturalism has become increasingly evident. As a multicultural journalist navigating through the complex tapestry of diverse cultures in America, it is imperative to scrutinize the representation of these cultures in various spheres, such as education materials, media, and other platforms. This examination goes beyond mere observation, delving into the initiatives that strive to foster more inclusive representation.

Education is a cornerstone for shaping perspectives and fostering understanding among individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, a critical analysis of education materials often reveals a lack of diverse representation. Textbooks, for instance, have traditionally centered around a Eurocentric narrative, sidelining the rich histories and contributions of various ethnic groups. According to goguardian.com, “Educators agree that teachers who are culturally responsive and proficient, and perhaps diverse themselves, can help address racial disparities in student achievement. Part of an educator’s job is to help students understand the impact of each of their lives on one another and their ability to impact and shape the world at large. By encouraging and celebrating diversity in your classrooms, you can empower students to feel safe, build healthy relationships, and make meaningful impact on others.”

Initiatives such as the #OwnVoices movement and calls for diverse curriculum reform are gaining momentum. The #OwnVoices movement advocates for authentic representation by encouraging creators from marginalized communities to tell their own stories. In parallel, efforts to diversify curricula aim to incorporate a broader range of perspectives, ensuring students encounter a more accurate reflection of the world around them.

Media, being a powerful influencer of public opinion, plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural perceptions. Historically, mainstream media has struggled with the accurate portrayal of diverse cultures, often perpetuating stereotypes or engaging in tokenism. This can contribute to the perpetuation of bias and the reinforcement of harmful stereotypes. One of the most significant challenges is the prevalence of stereotypes in mainstream media. Cultures are often reduced to simplistic, one-dimensional portrayals that reinforce existing biases and misconceptions. This perpetuation of stereotypes can lead to the reinforcement of harmful tropes, contributing to the marginalization and misrepresentation of diverse communities.

Mainstream media has historically underrepresented certain cultural groups, creating a skewed portrayal that does not reflect the true diversity of society. This underrepresentation can lead to the erasure of certain voices and experiences, fostering a limited and homogenized understanding of different cultures.

Mainstream media is sometimes guilty of cultural appropriation, where elements of a particular culture are taken out of their original context and used for aesthetic or entertainment purposes. This not only dilutes the richness and depth of the culture but can also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and reinforce power imbalances.

In response to these challenges, there has been a growing push for diversity and inclusion in the media. Organizations like the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the Media Diversity Institute work towards fostering accurate and positive representation. Hollywood has faced increasing scrutiny for its lack of diversity. According to the guardian.com; Verna Myers, former senior vice-president of inclusion strategy at Netflix, expressed her decision to depart the company in a LinkedIn post, stating, “Though leaving Netflix is a challenging choice, I’ve been sensing the need to extend my efforts beyond a single industry. My goal is to tackle the growing polarization in the world by working across diverse sectors and employing a more spiritual perspective to contribute towards bridging societal divides.”

The rise of online platforms and social media has democratized content creation, providing an opportunity for underrepresented voices to be heard. However, the digital landscape is not without its challenges. Algorithms and content moderation policies on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter have been criticized for perpetuating biases and stifling diverse voices.

Via social media, individuals can explore various cultures, religions, and beliefs, broadening their awareness and comprehension of the world. Furthermore, social media serves as a platform for connecting with individuals who share similar interests, fostering communities that champion diversity and inclusivity. Despite the progress made, challenges persist. The lack of representation behind the scenes remains a significant issue. A diverse cast or storyline loses its impact if the creators themselves do not represent diverse perspectives. Efforts to increase diversity in hiring, leadership roles, and decision-making positions are crucial for sustained change.

Moreover, cultural sensitivity and avoiding cultural appropriation are ongoing concerns. Striking a balance between representation and avoiding stereotypes requires a nuanced approach that involves collaboration, consultation, and genuine engagement with communities. Furthermore, the nuanced aspects of cultural sensitivity and the imperative to steer clear of cultural appropriation remain persistent concerns in the realms of representation and storytelling. Achieving a delicate equilibrium between authentically representing diverse cultures and steering clear of harmful stereotypes necessitates a sophisticated approach. This approach involves active collaboration, extensive consultation, and genuine engagement with the communities being portrayed.

Cultural sensitivity goes beyond mere acknowledgment and requires a deep understanding of the cultural nuances, values, and perspectives of the communities depicted. It involves respecting and valuing the diverse elements that constitute a culture, steering away from reductionist or caricatured portrayals that perpetuate stereotypes.

Avoiding cultural appropriation adds another layer of complexity. It entails being vigilant about borrowing or incorporating elements from a culture without understanding or respecting their significance. This requires creators to engage in thorough research, seek input from the communities involved, and ensure that their representation is authentic, respectful, and free from distortion.

The key to navigating this intricate landscape lies in fostering genuine connections with the communities portrayed. Collaboration implies actively involving individuals from the community in the creative process, allowing their voices to shape the narrative. Consultation involves seeking feedback and guidance, ensuring that the portrayal aligns with the community’s own perceptions of their culture. Genuine engagement goes beyond surface-level interactions, involving a commitment to understanding the lived experiences, histories, and aspirations of the communities involved.

As a multicultural journalist, my mission is to bring about positive change by actively contributing to a more inclusive and representative media landscape. My approach involves a multifaceted strategy aimed at authentically representing diverse cultures and introducing a variety of backgrounds into mainstream media.

I believe in the power of storytelling to foster understanding and empathy. My commitment is to tell stories that authentically capture the nuances, richness, and diversity of various cultures. This involves extensive research, on-the-ground reporting, and building relationships with community members to ensure that their voices are accurately represented.

There are countless stories waiting to be told from underrepresented communities. I plan to actively seek out and highlight narratives that often go unnoticed in mainstream media. By shedding light on these stories, I aim to challenge stereotypes, broaden perspectives, and amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized or overlooked.

I recognize the importance of promoting cultural literacy in the media. Through my work, I intend to educate and inform audiences about different cultures, traditions, and histories. This includes addressing common misconceptions, dispelling stereotypes, and providing context to foster a more informed and culturally sensitive audience.

True representation involves collaboration. I plan to actively collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that the creative process is inclusive and respectful. By working alongside community members, I aim to co-create narratives that reflect their experiences and perspectives authentically. Real change starts within the newsroom. I am committed to advocating for and supporting diversity initiatives within media organizations. This includes promoting the recruitment and retention of journalists from various cultural backgrounds, as well as encouraging a workplace culture that values diverse perspectives.

In the digital age, I recognize the power of online platforms to reach a global audience. Through strategic use of digital media, including social platforms, podcasts, and online publications, I plan to share stories that transcend geographical boundaries. This approach enables me to connect with audiences worldwide and contribute to a more interconnected understanding of diverse cultures.

Representation is an ongoing conversation. I plan to actively engage in dialogues about representation in media, participating in discussions, and advocating for responsible and inclusive storytelling. This involves not only reflecting on my own work but also encouraging others in the industry to critically examine their portrayals of diverse cultures.

To ensure sustained change, I believe in empowering the next generation of journalists. I plan to engage in mentorship programs, sharing my experiences and insights with aspiring journalists from diverse backgrounds. By nurturing talent and providing guidance, I aim to contribute to a future media landscape that values and reflects the diversity of our society.

To further my mission of promoting diversity in media and addressing the critical issue of media inequity, I am enthusiastic about joining the South Jersey Information Equity Project (SJIEP). As the Center for Cooperative Media has meticulously studied the New Jersey news landscape, revealing the dearth of information in many areas, particularly in underserved South Jersey communities and communities of color, I find the SJIEP’s mission resonates deeply with my own goals. The partnership between the Center and the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists to launch this initiative in April 2020 underscores a commitment to improving the quality and quantity of news and information tailored for communities of color. By joining this group, I aim to actively contribute to discussions, initiatives, and projects that address the media disparities in South Jersey, fostering a more inclusive and informed media environment that truly reflects the diversity of our communities.

My approach as a multicultural journalist is rooted in a commitment to authenticity, inclusivity, and advocacy. Through purposeful storytelling, collaboration, and a dedication to cultural understanding, I aim to make a meaningful impact on the representation of diverse cultures in media and contribute to a more interconnected and empathetic global community.

In essence, achieving a balance between representation and avoiding stereotypes demands a commitment to cultural humility – an ongoing process of learning, unlearning, and adapting. It is an acknowledgment that cultures are dynamic, multifaceted, and continuously evolving. By embracing this approach, storytellers and creators contribute to a more authentic and respectful portrayal of diverse cultures, fostering a richer tapestry of narratives that reflects the true complexity of our interconnected world.

As a multicultural journalist in America, the examination of cultural representation in education, media, and other platforms is not just a professional obligation but a personal commitment to fostering understanding and harmony. The initiatives discussed highlight the collective efforts aimed at dismantling stereotypes, challenging biases, and building a more inclusive society where every culture is celebrated and valued. The journey towards genuine representation is ongoing, but the strides made so far serve as a testament to the transformative power of diverse voices in shaping our shared narrative.
