MT. LAUREL, N.J. – The Alice Paul Institute (API) at Paulsdale in Mt. Laurel will host a site clean-up day on Saturday, April 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The day is a part of spring maintenance for the site so grounds remain enjoyable for visitors during the spring and summer months.
The 6.5 acres of land are home to Paulsdale, a National Historic Landmark and the childhood home of Alice Stokes Paul.
Born on January 11, 1885 in Mount Laurel, Alice Paul was the architect of some of the most important political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century. She was a leader in the fight to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1920 to extend voting rights to women, and authored the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923 and spent the rest of her life fighting for its ratification to ensure the U.S. Constitution protects women and men equally.
Today, API honors Alice Paul’s legacy by maintaining the site, offering heritage and girls’ leadership development, and advocating for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The institute’s goals include building the civic engagement needed to advance gender equality, advancing appreciation of women’s history, and promoting its importance in understanding the social, economic, and political situation of women today.
Interested volunteers can sign up to help out here.
Volunteers are asked to take note that the day will involve light, medium, and some heavy manual labor, to be assigned based on ability; the terrain at Paulsdale is predominantly grassy with some areas being more uneven than others, with a gravel driveway; there is a first floor bathroom that meets accessibility standards.
It is recommended that those volunteering wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. If you have access to gardening or work gloves, please bring them with you. There will be some on-site for necessary jobs, but quantities will be limited.
All volunteers are also asked to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines per CDC recommendations.
The Alice Paul Institute at Paulsdale is located at 128 Hooton Road, Mount Laurel. For more information, call (856) 231-1885 or email at info@alicepaul.org.
