NATIONAL PARK, N.J. – The annual Herb and Flower Show, sponsored by the Gloucester County Certified Gardeners, will take place on Sunday, June 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at the James and Ann Whitall House and Gardens, Red Bank Battlefield, 100 Hessian Avenue, National Park. The theme this year is The Whitall’s Home.
A ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m., will feature a new colonial garden that the Certified Gardeners have completed at the site. The Colonial Garden reflects the time period and contains heirloom varieties of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The plants in the garden would have been used by the Whitall family for food, medicinal remedies, and dyes for clothing.
“The gardens at the James and Ann Whitall House are cared for and maintained by a group of talented volunteers, and the Herb and Flower show is one of the best times to come and visit the gardens as well as to show your growing skills from your own garden,” Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said in a press release.
Visitors to the flower show will be able to vote for Best in Show for Artistic and Horticultural Exhibitions and the winners will be announced at 3 P.M There will be free workshops on gardening topics, and Certified Gardeners on hand to answer lawn and garden questions. Special activities for children are planned, and there will be vendors with plants, garden-related items and handicrafts for sale.
“The Herb and Flower show is an open show and a great way for residents to exhibit their gardening skills or to experience the work of the entrants and learn about gardening,” Freeholder Jim Lavender, liaison to the Department of Parks, said.
For the Herb and Flower Show there are two competitive divisions – Artistic and Horticultural. Each division has several themed classes. Entries are open to all non-professionals. Horticulture entries must be grown by the exhibitor.
Registration is the day of the event and no pre-registration is required. Exhibits must be delivered between 8 and 9 a.m. to the Whitall house on June 23. There is no registration fee-the event is free for exhibitors and visitors.
