ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A former New York attorney and philanthropist who grew up in Atlantic City has started a scholarship program at Stockton University that will cover all college costs for a group of students with connections to the city.
The Engelberg Leadership Scholarship Program (ELSP) is funded by recognized intellectual property attorney Alfred Engelberg and his wife, Gail, with a $1 million gift commitment.
The goal of the ELSP is to encourage students to stay in Atlantic City and to become Atlantic City’s new community leaders after they graduate.
“The Stockton Atlantic City Campus creates an opportunity for local students who might otherwise forego a higher education to obtain a university degree while remaining in the community,” said Engelberg. “This makes it possible to identify talented young men and women with the potential to be the next generation of business, civic, and communal leaders in Atlantic City, and provide them with an enriched set of educational, experiential, and mentoring experiences to turn that potential into a reality.”
ELSP will cover the full cost of tuition, fees, room, board, books, and other expenses. It will also provide leadership and experiential activities and internships to help the students develop their leadership potential.
Four Stockton sophomores were introduced as the first Engelberg Leadership Scholars at the Atlantic City Executive Council meeting August 20 at the Stockton Atlantic City campus.
The recipients of the ELSP are:
- Elena Gonzalez, a Literature major from Atlantic City
- Bao Pham, a Criminal Justice major from Atlantic City
- Steven Rubio, a Computer Science major from Ventnor who attended Atlantic City High School
- Loukaia Taylor, a Communications major from Atlantic City
“This is a phenomenal leadership development program for our students,” Stockton President Harvey Kesselman said. “[Engelberg] wants to give back and he understands what his philanthropy means.”
