There are camps and activities for the kids, adults, and the whole family.
The unofficial start of summer is upon us, bringing more activities in and around the Glasstown Arts District, Millville. Some of you may be looking for programs for the kids to enjoy throughout the summer, and others may want to explore our own backyards. Here are suggestions to guide you in your search.
If your children like art, consider our Art Creates Excellence (ACE) summer camp. This is the 20th year that it is offered at reasonable prices. Youngsters ages 7 to 8 and 9 to 12 can attend one to four weeks, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Teens (13 to 18) classes are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program starts on July 8 and continues until August 2.
Each week, they have different artists/instructors. Three weeks are held in the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts (RRCA) and one week is at the Cumberland County College Arts & Innovation Center (Clay College) for ceramics. Cost includes all supplies. Space is filling up, so if your child is interested, call 856-293-0556.
Also, for the kids, is the Levoy Theatre’s summer performing arts camp. There are two age groups: 7 to 10 and 11 to 17, with the camp running from June 28 to July 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the end, there will be performances for the families and friends of these talented kids. Sign up before the camp is full by calling 856-327-6400.
There are enrichment programs for adults who want a hands-on experience. The RRCA offers summer workshops (856-327-4500) as does the Clay College (856-765-0988). At Pat Witt’s Barn Studio of Art, you can find a variety of adult classes with expert artists. These classes are once a week for six weeks. Call 856-825-5028.
There is a wide variety of half- and full-day activities you can plan with your children, with friends and by yourself. We have a treasure trove of delightful places you can discover. We always recommend Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, 1508 Glasstown Road, for a half day. The former “Wheaton Village” is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s an admittance fee to go to the Museum of American Glass and the furnace to see demonstrations of glass blowing. You can even make your own paperweight for an exciting interactive experience. The gallery and shops are open at no charge. WheatonArts hosts dozens of special events throughout the year; we know you’ll be back often. Reach them at 856-825-6800.
The Millville Army Airfield Museum is near and dear to our hearts. It is a rich part of the history of Millville during the World War II era. It was chosen as the sight of the first American defense airfield in the United States at the beginning of the war. Fighter pilots trained here to fly the P-47, which is credited for saving many bombers on missions from England over Belgium and France on the way to Germany. The museum has grown over the last two decades and includes hundreds of artifacts from the servicemen and the equipment they used. Every two to three years, the museum hosts a giant airshow often featuring the Blue Angels and other top-notch flying teams. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 856-327-2347.
Why not wrap up a nice day with dinner at one of the fine restaurants in Glasstown Arts District (High Street)? There are great choices from four-star classic cuisine to Italian and Mexican fare or pub fare.
Check the box office at the Levoy Theatre to plan your next visit to the art galleries and a live performance.
